I got out an old Exoterra brand fake vine from my reptile tank (my gecko didn't utilise it), thought that I'd might make some proper use out of it. I tied everything I just bought to the vine, which is made from soft spongy resin that soaks up water really good with bendable wires inside.

Nice arrangement you have there!. Too bad for your gecko tho.

funkychips : a gentle word of caution on the fake vine...if it`s spongy and remains wet for a long time, you might want to re-think about attaching tills to it. the part of the till which makes contact with the vine might rot as a result of too much constant moisture.
driftwood ( the lighter more hollow ones ) is probably the best material to utilise.
it looks great tho, like some Ikebana arrangement.

Ouch! True that, thanks for reminding, tarence ;D. But compared to driftwood, it dries out more quickly tho. The material is something like plastic, made into crumbs and stuck on a piece of plastic backing which binds up the wire frame. In hot weather, it'll dry proper. But will still look for driftwood, or worse comes to worse, hang it on stainless steel and forgo aesthetics hehe...

OMG.........s.steel? ?? It'll burn faster. To the least, try to get a plastic coated wire or similiar. Best is a driftwood

Ok, I'll get driftwood and some fishing line tomorrow. I'm just worried about mounting the large till I brought home today because the till doesn't have a sufficiently long basal stem and tying it with fishing line might damage the leaves if it cuts through. I might just as well hang it with plastic coated wire like you said. found this hiding in a relative's garden under a rambutan tree, gone unnoticed until today. Offered to get rid of it and took it home and found that a trojan army of ants had been nesting in there . I soaked the whole plant in water for 15 mins to find that after lifting up the plant the ants appeared from between the leaves like they were holding their breath underwater. I dunked it back for a further one hour before all of them came floating up in clumps. now it's drying by a fan in my room. it looks strangely like a xero or capitata, but could also be a hybrid. Anyone can pls help ID?

It look very much like a xero to me. Only by feeling the leaves will tell what it is. Does it feel very rigid and hard. Fibrous and doesn't break easily? Will try to post few of my xero. for identification.

yup, rigid and hard, slightly softer than an aechmea chantinii leaf, and a little on the fuzzy side. I don't think it snaps easily (I wouldn't want to try ) but alot of xeros have a bluish tint right? this is yellowish grey... and the leaves are not that broad.....yeah ok wait for your pics to confirm....thanks in advance... ;D

I think it was placed in a shady area. That contributed to elolongated and narrow leaves. here are some of my xero.

yep I think I have a xero. or most likely. your plants are gorgeous! do you grow yours in direct sun?

Yup, I do expose them to sunlight. The longer the better and more silvery it will be. And not forgetting more curly worly leaves too........
However, it need some 'training' first before directly expose your xero. to direct sun.

Haha I always like curly worly leaves on xeros ;D. So rain or shine, it's out in the open....I suppose I don't have to worry much about water trapped in the leaves then, since it seems yours is not very tilted? yup...training will commence tomorrow, elementary level

But sad to say like raining days, there's no curl to the leaves. Somewhat like what you are having right now. Needs lots of sunlight to 'curl' it up again.

my adult xero kiao-ed after being exposed to too much rain.......it was a huge plant & a sad loss. just wanted to share it to highlight that xeros can trap water in between their leaves & rot if your environment does not have enuff air movement....lucky it produced a pup which i managed to save before it fell apart in my hands.
i think andy`s xero is tilted enuff to disallow water stagnation. i believe andy measures the angle tilt to ensure that. heheh. i must do the same !

I might just as well hang it with plastic coated wire like you said. Hi funky chips, Hey, you can try the following way to hang your xerographica. That's how I hang mine. Use the air hose for fish tanks. Connect the two ends with the plastic connectors or a metal piece from cloth hanger so that it is a circle. Then just use the normal plastic pot hangers to hook on it. After that just place your xero on it. It does not matter if it does not have a long stem. The 3 plastic hanger line will hold the plant in place and your plant has 1st class seat on the nice bouncy air hose.

u very inventive lah David.......heehee. good idea.
but a gentle advice & note : i was told that some tills prefer some medium to root on to i.e driftwood. it seems to make them propagate or clump easier. growth is more or less the same.
andy : any comments ? i know the stricta from you thrives better if it rooted on something i.e. driftwood rite ?

Good idea David. I'll get the air hose tomorrow, and a piece of driftwood to tie my other tills. but speaking of driftwood, if you spray or soak the plants won't it get wet and take some time to dry?
