Dear members, This is a picture of the raff "squat red"(modified thread, thought it was xhookeriana) that I bought from Sg. Buluh today. The leaves of plant has red underside which caught my attention. Bought for Rm20, very cheap with 7 pitchers, can't even get this price from MT. Here's the cuties. Cheers, Isaac

Nope! It's N.rafflesiana "Squat red"! Oh, I got it completely wrong again! Hahha, oh well, it's nice anyway. There's 2 types of xHookeriana brown speckled going for Rm30 and Rm40 from different suppliers. YG's ones has ground pitchers also and command the higher price. Rgds, Isaac

Hi Lisham, yes it's very cute. It's pinkish and very attractive. I bought it because it's so cheap, if I grow this from Seeds will probably take me 2 years. Rgds, Isaac

That plant does resemble a plant that MT sold at one time. It had discolored leaves as that one did. I would investigate where that came from. If it is a seed origin plant, then there must be populations of this form in the wild. If I were living in your neck of the woods, I would forget about hamatas and rajahs and concentrate on the true treasures of nepenthes. Almost everyone can grow these and they big for us warm, humid climate ghrowers. And one day, we can trade pollen and seeds and awaken new forms and varitries of this highly variable species.

Michael,
When I went to the "gathering of nurseries", which is Sungai Buluh in KL, malaysia, there were many nurseries that carries this particular squat red form. The source is from Cameron Highlands I was told. They are mass producing this variety but this is the only first time I have seen this variety. It is indeed a wonderful variant.

Hey How you guys make rafflesiana pitcher?
Off topic. I get a rafflesiana and i decide to repot, when i pull the plant out from its soil media, It seems like i have broken its root, will it die?

Instead of pulling the plant out of its pot, place fingers around pot leaving the plant centered through middle fingers and then tilt upside-down and tap or squeeze pot to bring out the whole plant and media in a single piece. Do not disturb roots as these are very tender and fragile.

It is not all lost yet jeff1u. Treat it like a cutting. Do it quick! If you are not sure how to do it, check out the archive/article section under Nepenthes. I have an article there on how to make a cutting. ... quick, quick, quick... you can save it!

there definitely are some roots still intact, if that's the case repot as usual but keep in a cool place.

hawoo... off topic abit.... but still re: n. raff... why mine stopped producing pitchers ah? What's the ideal growing conditions for n. raff?
p/s: about the broken nep... Once I ordered some plants from MT, my n. bellii red pitcher green peristome arrived with 1 small, small offshoot (as in 10cent diameter) at the base while the vine broken into 2. I poked the broken stem back into the potting media... Now I got 2 n. bellii.
