Mimosa... much like Lantana, both considered a weed in Malaysia though related to Venus Flytraps. Don't know about the rest of the world. Friend came from Melbourne last month was absolutely facinated by Mimosa pudica. Mind you he's a Ph.D. from RMIT. Can send you some Mimosa piagra or invicita if you want some. Maybe was can have some trade here. hehe

Mimosa pudica is commonly known among theMalays as 'daun semalu' or 'duri keman' right? oh the horror of capital punishment during school day! Trust me, I've been there.

Well... this is old history, this was who I was then, I'm better behaved this days When the teachers and wardens got really fed-up with our antics - sneaking out of school, skipping study hours, pulling pranks on teachers & support staffs + etc., they decided they had to come up with a new form of punishments since they can't cane us girls - this is allowed if you are caught smooching! Their solution came in the form of this thing called "Khidmat Bakti" aka. community service. The thing is, it's a misnomer, it's more like "Torture Labor" to little 'innocent' us then! They came up with every dirty & hard labor they can think of! After getting away for the umphteen times, the 'law' finally caught up with us, we were asked to report to "Menteri Tenaga Rakyat" - the Phys. Ed teacher who's the master of torture. The battings of my eye-lids didn't make his heart flutter, to the field we taken taken. He took out some raffia, and started marking some 5m x 5m plots on the field. Each of us was assigned to one, when asked what should we do, he said start pulling. Told him the grass is already shorn, nothing to pull out. He said look closer, it's the mimosa you are after, and the whole plants with them roots has to go! The parched field were covered in them. The only tool allowed is your bare hands. ( We later found out he had this done 'cos his star footballer likes to play barefoot, so we can't let him hurt his little tootsies, can we What happened to him is totally another story) Oh god! The thorns were very sharp, the ground hard from the recent drought. Took us almost the whole weekend to complete it to his 'satisfaction'. Our hands were covered in tiny pricks and it was quite painful. The 'drama queens' in us of course had to make a big deal out of it, we went around with bandaged hands for the rest of the week! My friend even went to the extend of refusing to play volleyball for the rest of the semester, claiming there were still thorns left behind on her palm! Oh btw, apparently pulling out the mimosas with the roots actually helps them from spreading. And the next time we were caught, we came prepared with plier! ;D

You put a smile on my face Athene. Interesting story tho not so fun for you then. I have came across a website from USA/Australia some time back on this plant. I was amazed that people would have a whole website on this plant we consider a weed in Malaysia. Of course it was wrong of me to think like that. Just like how I am amazed with some plants from overseas and the plants are so common to the people there. In English and in layman's terms it is also called "touch-me-not" right? But I must say this plant really grows everywhere, not only in forest areas in Malaysia. I use to help my dad uproot them from the garden... but of course not so bold like Athene with her bare hands. I have twizers, haa, haa. They are so irritating. Keep coming back in the garden. But I think this is a very unique plant. I did cultivate a few pots some time back to the amazement of my family and friends. They were like... "Why on earth do you cultivate this weed?"

Athene, That's a good one! Actually it'a an interesting plant coming to think of it. Pink powder puff flower, sensitive leaves and ofcourse it would make a marvellous ornamental minus it's thorns.
