So i tot of asking him to bring some neps, but he ended bringing me a platycerium. heheh.. well, he said that its hard to come by of people selling neps at the market, because according to the people there, the officers are very strict on people selling neps. (Anyhow, he is not into neps too ) he also bring me a plant which the seller claims as a wild orchid. But the plant hasnt have any flowers yet. Well, can anyone help me to ID this platy?

Naj : this is p.ridleyii.....semi collectors item...expensive a bit too.....price range from rm35 to a few hundred.....for this size, we can get cheapest mebbe rm35. it seems to grow better with a tree trunk or some wood in it`s back. usually the ones we buy w/out anything attached don`t seem to last long. You`ll have to water aimed right into the middle section of the plant ( where the fronds/leaves come out ). I water it daily coz it drips dry anyways. It prefers not so sunny areas, if kena a bit of sun ok ( mine gets filtered sun frm 4-6p.m.) but not full sun coz it might get roasted. it will be more stable when it gets bigger but this is a lil babe. In the platy world, this is a cutie pie. Fertiliser, i use fish based fertiliser, diluted according to the instruction, once a month. Liang : any tips to add or correct ? errr...do you still have this ?

Hi Tarence, Thanx for the elaboration. Dunno you are very excellent in Platys too Btw, what did u meant by semi collectors? Water it from the front, at the bull's-eye? How often do u water in a day? As u can see, the plant is attached (tied) to a Y-shaped 'kayu bakau'. So do i need to untie it and mount it on a board? Sorry for the many questions. heheh

Naj : collector`s item = rare. this one is semi-rare....so semi-collector`s item....missed the hypen there.....heheh. yep, water it from the front at the bull`s eye....i water mine daily coz my house is quite dry. you may choose to water every other day, one way to guess how often.....hold the plant when it is dry....feel the weight. Then water it fully, feel the weight after that...next day, hold it again & see if it`s closer to dry weight or still heavy like full of water. you should be able to make an educated guess after that. you need to do it only once but also got to take things like weather changes into consideration. btw, that pillar looks like very open exposed area, too bright, too full of hot windy air...not natural surroundings for a stag...i know it could be the only space available in your house but just fyi...best place would be to hang it from a tree branch which is what i do....once again, ideal versus what space you have Naj.... also this particular stag is not able to get water from rain as the non-fertile fronds ( the wrap-around leaves cover the whole plant , even the back portion ! heheh ) so we figured that the only way water gets in is from the bull`s eye. we stand corrected of course but i`ve had my current one for 14 months already & it`s flourishing ( also killed 3 in the past coz no wood/branch at the root area & mebbe wrong watering technique, could be too much water like bifurcatum said) btw, if by saying expert like i`ve killed a few & learnt from the experience, then yes, i`m an expert ! heheh. Liang is an expert...dunno who else.....

Hi all,
A lot of collectors do regards P. ridleyii as one of the collector's item. This is due to its the only Platy that have upright antlers fertile frond. It's sterile shield fronds have very distinctive intricate tectures that no other platy could come close in matching to P. ridleyii except for P. madagascariensis. In fact the will thrive if there are ants inhibit in the shield fronds. This is actually a symbiosis between the ants and the platy.
Ridleyii will do well with less water though, just let them have a period of drying before the next watering will be good for the plants. but, the setback is that this is a solidarity plant, meaning it will not produce any pups or offsets. So.....as to say, if the point of growth died off means you can look for another new plant!
It does require a sheltered but bright place to grow well. As a general rule. 50% shade cloth or equivalent is good. Do kee in mind that they grow high up among tree canopy above coronarium at river banks. Thus it require very good ventilation with high humidity.
Hope this does help. Of course, to ensure their survival, all plants can and do adapt to new enviroment. Cheers!!

Hi,
My first staghorns were given to me by an orchid grower. He gave me 5. As I am no expert I was left with two (need identifying) Then on the trip to Bukit Keledang I got P. stamaria from Fung. I paid RM100 for it. It was still cheaper than the P ridleyi , which looked like a cabbage. He wanted RM200 for it.
My 4th sp is a fully grown coronarium with long pendulum leaves for RM45. The next platy is tc from Holland - pot grown bifurcatum. Only RM18. But I have to figure which way is up. And I hope I have got it right.
At a nursery at Bangi, I saw a ridleyi totally covered with moss with a very small antler. Since this sp is hard to comeby I picked it up for RM25. It is doing well.
I almost picked up my 7th sp - P. wallichii. I wasn't sure then. It has leaves in pairs and the leaves are more upright than coronarium.
All the platyceriums with the exception of coronarium are mounted on my brick-fence facing the East. It used to very shady. But now MPPKajang has just cropped all the angsana trees growing beside my house. Now I have very strong morning sun. But this doesn;t seem to affect the platys. I water all my plants- orchids, platys, neps, ferns, everything ecery evenings.
cheers Choong

I dunno who or where this blogspot is from, but it has pictures of Platycerium and other ferns. Have a look p/s: sells platys too! platyceriumferns.blogspot.com/

atmccmn: Thanks for your thoughts i'm really a beginner on Platys. So far, my Ridleyi is producing a new 'horn' the first time after a got it. Im sure this is a good sign. heheh. Erm do u think i have to 're-pot' this fella and mount it on a board?

Naj...the problem with this stag is you can`t really mount it on anything coz the back potion is circular......and the root area is very small, just suited for a tree branch. I suggest you try to find a suitable tree branch to cut off and place it there.... Andy : what say you ?

Tarence is correct in a way. Personally, I find a board is not favourable for ridleyii. It tend to make it's shield frond go flat, which I find it is an ugly sight. Sorry no offence to others!! Strictly my personal prefference.
Or rather you can find a pvc pipe say with 4" dia as a host for your ridleyii. But I would rather do nothing at the moment as your plant do look a bit fragile. Just take a good care of it and see how it goes after a year. Cheers!

Thanks Tarence, Andy for your views. Alrite, I will let it as it is for now. Perhaps when it gets bigger, i will have to find some method to mount it on something. And i hope to hear your views in the future!
