On a working schedule plying between Kota kinabalu ( Sabah ) and Lawas (Sarawak) along the route i had the opportunity to take some interesting images and in search for wild pitcher plants.
Images of part of Kota Kinabalu.
Like Kuching there aren't many tall building. The waters around sabah are crystal clear with some of the best diving spots in the world. Manukan island (Tunku Abdul Rahman Park) was only 20 minutes opposite K.Kinabalu. The shallow water are throng with fish population and beautiful corals.
The fame nepenthes mt. the highest in S.E. Asia (Mt. Kinabalu 4,010 meter) dominating the landscape of Sabah.
viewing from Manukan Island
sunsets
A grim reminder of W.W.II
Interesting red bananas, common in Borneo.
water buffaloes a common sight
some images from Lawas. The water village of Awat-Awat. The Malay communiy here are mostly fishermen. For the kids the river was their playground.
One of the Mts-Malingan Range, bordering sarawak/sabah.
It was rainy season. With 4x4 it was also a pain negotiating while driving up the muddy logging road.
Rain brings water down from the highlands and watersheds, swift and treacherous.
Other interesting jungle residence.
An old tree that supporting many form of ferns, ant plants and orchids
unknown wild fruits
wild fungi a common sight in the lowland rainforest.
Interesting bird's nest fungi with soft white membrane, once it breaks open it revealed the peridioles(seeds) that carried the spores forming new fungal bodies.
coral fungi
maiden veil or stinkhorn fungi
Borneon Gibbon (wak-wak) not easily seen but very common to hear their morning call as early as 5.30am( from the last MT. Murud and Batu Lawi trip)
Lok Kawi Zoo, K.kinabalu
pitcher plants from the lowlands to elevation 1,000meter asl.
Along the road numerous location were visited to reveal very interesting pitcher plants.
rare kuchingensis.
an upper trichocarpa.
N.hookeriana -upper and lower(from the same plant)
another form
It's interesting to note many neps. that i came across are growing in exposed sand stone ground, very wet this time of the year .
N.gracilis x N.bicalcarata
rafflesiana (typical form) scrambling up among the trees.
flowering male and female rafflesiana.
big seed pods
probably a hybrid mirabilis x rafflesiana
unusual red tint for an upper pitcher
equally huge giant form lower pitcher, like those found around kuching
a giant upper pitcher
fleckled red with expanded wings
A lower raff. var alata giant form, similar to those found in Sandakan.
raff. var alata lower pitchers . A comparison with the squatting form on the right, from Lundu.
male inflorescence
fusca and reinwardtiana(similarly found in Bario) were common around 1000meter asl. Note the loose eroded sandstone.
