I just came back to KL last Sat have been thinking about Nep . On Sunday, wait no more, quickly headed towards Sg Buloh. First stop was Hee Garden. Quite disappointed as the price quoted was high and not much choice. Then proceed further to a shop by the road side. Got 2 pots at much lower price than what Hee quoted. Very happy with these 2 new pots! A good friend told me this is raf upper and lower from Rompin.

the first is a rafflesiana, but the second is probably a hybrid, not a rafflesiana upper

The first is a raff, presumably 'Johor spotted' variety, the second looks like a x gentle. My two cents....

the 2nd looks like a n.fusca hybrid to me...the peristome should turn red soon with some sun exposure.

YC, my gentle suggestion is to go slow & pick the nep varieties which look nice to you. Some of my personal favs are truncata, rafflesiana, bicalcarata & veitchii. You can get those from Fauzi, depending on stock. He has nice plants at reasonable prices.

Tarence, Thanks for your advice. I have already picked up truncata, raf bau giant from Fauzi... Yes, I agree with you to go slow but steady...

I got one of those (secon picture) from Sg. buloh last weekend for a friend. bump into Lau. He told me it was a fusca hybrid. He said if the stems have redish colouration, it is a fusca hybrid.
Hey YC, do you have any personal favorites at the moment? Any dream plant to get?

Hi David, I am still very new and have yet had time to differentiate different type of Nep. But I think currently I am hoping to get N. albomarginata, N. rajah and other types of big cup Nep. Even the one posted by Cindy (dark purple color) is very attractive!
p/s: what is fusca hybrid?

YC, I noticed you are attracted to getting N.rajah, but it is a highland plant and may not give you big pitchers if you grow it outdoors. It is a highland plant and will need air conditioning for it to grow well. As for fusca hybrid, it means one of the parent plants that give rise to the hybrid is N. fusca, a species plant. Lots of Neps have been hybridized with each other to produce desirable traits in horticulture. good luck finding your fave neps!

Hi funkychips Thanks for the info. As for N rajah... it is something that I dream to have but in reality, I dont think I will get it yet for the reasons you have just mentioned. Dont want to kill this plant in my hand. I think next one in my list would be to get N albo....

While the myth of N. rajah is everywhere, there are so many large lowlands that have equal or larger size plus ease for growing. N. insignis also gets huge, N. merrilliana, has the largest pitchers according to many texts, who can deny that some of the rafflesiana giants are truly breathtaking, N. truncata can also attain huge dimensions. Then there are the hybrids. Soon we'll be seeing hybrids with rajah crossed with warmer species making them able to grow well for us low land growers. Look how quickly nepenthes hybridizing has come and look at what we're able to grow in our collections today. It won't be long before a rajah hybrid will be as common as a Ventrata or Miranda!
