These northiana seedlings were sown 14 months ago. They grow incredibly slow. Seeds sown took 2-4 months to germinate . It's a long wait ;D I use pure peat moss as the medium, nothing esle. It was placed in bright shaded area. The tiny moss have also taken residence and provide for a pleasing combination with the plantlets Robert

Robert, it is like art when I look at that pot of northania plantlets you have there. Hey, 2-4 months is ok leh... I heard it is a difficult species to grow but you manage to germinate them. Too bad you are in Sarawak. Can't drop by your place and poach a few from you... haa haa...

Is that sphagnum moss? Looks like but just a little small. Beautiful. I have trouble growing these nice mosses. It's always the slimy slipperly mushy kind. Yukes! I think it's because my artificial growing area is too hot.

Nice plantlet you have there. Ya, those mosses are nice, too. That is not sphagnum moss, it looks like fissiden to me. Isaac, are you here? Can you identify it?

Hiya David, i'm running out of space. If ever you or any drop by here feel free to bring some home, for free.. ;D
They are difficult to grow esp the bigger plant. The moss tend to prefer the New Zealand peat moss.
so Isaac is a master to ID mosses, yeah !

Dont' say I am moss expert lah. It's very hard to ID them, but the type you have doesn't look like fissidens. I've seen it in my hiking trips, they are terrestial and cannot be grown submersed.
I also grow my pitchers with mosses and terrestial pellia, they compliment the neps very well in retaining the moisture and gives a nice green feeling to it, rather than the normal dead spagnum. That's why I'm so surprised to see people growing live ones. I will try to collect some wild ones to try myself.
I echo David comments, too bad you are not in peninsula, otherwise we would love to have some.

Robert,
Perhaps, I can ask Michael Lo (Junglemike) to bring those northiana seedlings and whatever you want to clear along, on his next trip to Kuala Lumpur. We are trying to work out a trip to Bukit Bakar to check out N. benstonei. So please take good care of those cute seedlings alittle longer.

wow robert...are those really pure northiana species seedlings? congratz!!
u guys got photos of wild benstonei? is it lowland? that species is hard to get...
talking about dried sphagnum moss for media, i was cautioned by a friend that the cheap sphagnum moss from Taiwan is not as durable and long lasting. They get slimy and dun retain water well....If possible, get the New Zealand ones...ask robert where he got his dried sphagnum moss ..hehe

Hi Prana, they are most likely to be northiana as no other species were found growing on the hill. If there is a cross it could have happen long long ago. Hybrid with ampullaria or mirabilis would be fascinating. The only natural hybrid is with albormarginata and gracilis.very strange consider the abundance of ampullaria and mirabilis on the foothills. Ch'ien, what can be the explanation.

Prana, the NZ sphag.peat moss should be available in Singapore. while in s'pore i only shop for the dry long sphagnum moss at one of the centres(recommended by Cindy). i didn't look for the NZ sphag. peat moss as i do not want to carry heavy stuff home, but would like to know the availability ,wanted to compare the $ ;D This is the sphagnum peat moss i use, from New Zealand. The size " length 200mm x width 120mm x thickness 7mm. stated 1kg/packet RM9.50. when it's submerged into water the whole piece will become swollen to about 4" thick. It's the material wt + water = 1 kg. The dry pc wt. approx. 160 gram ! Some inetersting maths calculation here, depending how one cost it according to size or wt ! I also use live sphagnum moss to grow on one of the albo.plant.The moss never dry up. The pot was under 2 layer of 60% nursery shade, height approx 8ft. Direct sunlight only in early morning and late afternoon. Sphagnun moss need to be in cool and moist conds.so i spray with water everyday, sometimes i miss a day or two ;D Robert

Robert, Those Northiana is so cute .....!. I just love Northiana !!! I use to keep some last time. I keep them in high humidity under plastic and very bright light. IT did grow but very slowly and with little tiny pitcher. One day i decided to feed the pitcher with an insect larvae . I was shock to see within 2 weeks a giant leaves starts to grow and its like 3x the size of the last leaf. When i decide to take away the plastic bag is when i killed it. IT just dried up the roots just don't seems to grow. I am not sure its because it hates organic stuff . Since then i want to give it another try. Northiana is my dream Nepenthes hehhehe
