GONG XI FA CAI everybody! This is the vft I told David about. I bought it in Sg Buloh on Feb 3, after my fruitless trip to Putrajaya. When I got it the whole plant was dark red. I place it in the shade. It only receives sunshine for about an hour in the morning. And the new leaves are all green. I was about to ask if this is due to lack of sun-tanning until I saw Zakren's thread. So can this be akai ryu. Now I am placing it with lots of afternoon sun. What sarracenia is this? Choong

You have an akai ryu! Can I have a leaf? Been looking for akai ryu for a long time. Do you know how to do leaf propagation?

zakhren,
I have no experience on leaf propagation. If you advise me of the procedure, maybe I will give it a try.

www.bio.unipd.it/sarrazins/Techniques/tf_dionaea.htmlThis page isnt in english but there are helpful pictures. For leaf propagation, you need to get the whole leaf off (including the 'head'), and as much of the white stuff at the base of the leaf as possible. White stuff is very important. You should try and kinda pull the leaf away and slowly cut off the leaf with the white part. Once you have the leaf you lay it flat, that's horrizontal, on some damp peat moss, and lightly cover just the white bit with some of the peat. Don't stick the whole thing in the peat like a stick. And the whole thing should be in a see through, plastic container like what you get tau foo fa in or what you keep food in in the fridge. Must be in container to keep the humidity very high. (Make sure the container is clean of everything including soap. Wash very well with purified water, RO or distilled.) And then place the container under the sun. Edit: Bright light not direct sun. The water should condense in the container this is fine. The leaf will eventually go black and die, but as long as the white part is still white it's fine. After a while, (weeks, months), a little thing will start growing out of the white bit, but it has been recorded that it could start growing out of any part of the leaf. I would actually like 3 leaves for 3 new plants, but removing 3 leaves at once may be a bit shocking to the plant. Have to wait for the leaf to grow back first. Oh and vfts need like 8 hours of direct Malaysian sun to thrive (problem is keeping the soil moist in that sun), and the rest of the day bright light. That should get your akai ryu all red, maybe with a nice deep purple.

one thing to take note.
While doing the propagating. MUST MUST do it under bright shade, not directly sun, or use your body to cover. Not do it in night time. Day time will have higher successful rate.

Yeah better listen to jeff. He's done it before. Edit 3 : Some refferences for leaf propagation from one of the best FAQs : www.sarracenia.com/faq/faq2505.html www.sarracenia.com/photos/other/vario23.jpgEdit : Oh and kltower, I still don't know where you live. I presume KL? Edit 2 : Oh and I hear that you have live sphagnum moss? Could spare some for me? Just a bit so I can grow it from there.

Sigh! I've been going to Sg. Buloh every now and then just to look for this all red VFT but whenever I am there, stocks are out. Argghhhh.....
I think I got to go more often. Even asked mt friend to find for me in Cameron Highlands when he was there for holidays. No luck.
Err... Choong... any leaf cuttings to spare for me too?

Zakhren & David,
I am waiting for a few more leaves to grow before attemping the leaf-cut exercise.
BTW, 2 days ago after a CNY open house in the Sg Buloh area, I dropped by Sg Buloh to buy some plants for my garden. I went back to the place where I bought the akai ryu. YUP there were no more stocks. But they do have tuncatas with dark peristome. I also saw a sanguinea with few large pitchers in a nearby nuresery.

i had done a laef cutting propagation of a VFT and it seems to be successful However this is a typical vft. not sure whether the akai ryu will be harder to propagate or not. i placed the leaf cutting in a nescafe bottle and close the lid tight. This way, there is no way the water can escape to maintain the humudity. The medium is purely wet sphagnum peat and i placed it in a shady area. Will post a pic, but have no camera rite now. hehe ;D
