Dear All,
Today I was at Sg Buloh to buy grass for my garden. I managed to pop by the place where I bought my akai ryu. The place btw is Sister Nursery. I told them about petpitcher and ask them to reserve akai ryu when they receive new shipment. This is better than pot-luck. Tentatively, they are selling the plant at RM20. This is cheaper than what I had paid for (I paid RM23). Would be further discount if there is quantity.
So anybody who is interested in reserving one please put your name down. You will have to collect it from Sg Buloh.

Just bought the plants. Beautiful and healthy. The only thing is the center of the plant where new leaves grow looks a little greenish. Wonder if it's because the nursery does place them under shade. So the new leaves that are developing are greenish. Other than that the plants look great. A few pots have smaller plants growing together with a big plant. So, for those pots, there are a few plants growing in one pot.
Zak, how many pots did you buy? When you sms me in the morning (about 11am) you said there were about 30 pots. When I got there (about 3pm), there were less than 20 pots. Did you just bought 10 over pots?
You were right, I went over to Hee Garden and have a look. Wonder why they place their VFT (typical) under the shelf. Totally blocked from the sun. Those plants are gonna die soon tpgether with the sarracenias.

I only bought 1 pot haha. It had 2 smaller ones inside too so I got 3 plants. Gonna repot tomorrow. 10 went that fast? Wow~
Sister nursery is just 2 or 3 down from Hee nursery on the same side. There is no sign so it was a bit hard to find at first. Hee nursery has about 10 normal flytraps, 4 of them are flowering if someone wants seeds too.
Buy them quick, they're gonna die at Hee if noone buys them. Sister nursery knows how to care for them. Full sun. And the girl there has perfect English. Plus she was friendlier to me. Haha that doesn't have anything to do with care of plants but it makes it easier for a person like me with trouble with Malay and no clue on any chinese dialect.

Got one with a flower stalk but the flower has yet to bloom. Do I need to do anything at this stage?

Just treat it how you would treat a normal flytrap. Stand it in 1/4 inch of water, give it 4-6 hours direct sun. After flowering the plant may get a bit weak or grow slowly, it's normal and would recover as long as you're giving it what it needs.
Edit : And I just repoted my akai ryu, got 2 adult plants and 5, that's right, 5 little ones of varying sizes. Now I think I have too many akai ryus haha. And the pot has some green stuff coming out of it's potting media, I think it's actually live sphagnum moss~ But there are 2 types of grassy things growing so i'm not sure if it is live moss of just weeds... I'm growing both of them anyway and i'll take a pic once the grassy stuff is bigger.

Flowering actually exhaust the plant, if you have more then one plant, by all mean go ahead and let it flower. Anything goes wrong during the 'recovering' period may kill the plant easily as the plant is too weak for any harm. What is your purpose of getting seeds? If you just wanna see VFTs grow up from seeds to maturity, then it's fine. Or else you will risk the plant to death. The character of the mother plant don't pass down to the offspring, you may just endup with a common form of VFT after a few years of growing. (In some cases, there are plants bore same trait as parent, then I should congratulate you). The fastest way of getting a same form or cultivar is by division or leaf cutting. You can't call the offspring (from seeds) the same name for instance 'akai ryu' as parent plant eventhough it looks almost the same as akai ryu. Plants sold in the market are clones of the same cultivar. TS

Went to SB to take a look of the red VFT, there were ten over pots left. The new leaves have shown some green due to not getting enough sunlight, but they are healthy, can't resist to buy although I do already have, hehe...

I knew it! Haa, haa, how many pots you bought? Hmm, I wonder if they havve some stack away in another section of the nursery. When I took 12 pots from them, there were less than 10 pots left.
Anyway, did you get the one with red traps but the rest of the plant is green?

Well, I didn't know that flowering will severely weaken the plant until after reading some articles on the Internet. Sort of an impulse buy when I was in Sg. Buluh.
The flower stalk was already very tall when I bought it and the first flower bloomed today so I guess it is way too late to do anything and might as well let it flower... hopefully everything will be alright.

Hi ruslan, don worry. It might survive and also give you seeds. TS, what can we do in a situation like this to save the plant or strenghten it? Does it help if we feed it more?
By the way Ruslan, did you get the red VFT?

If you really want seeds, just let it be. If I were you, i will snip off the flower stalk as it keep on consuming the energy even it has already flowered to produce the seeds. More feeding doesn't help much. Put it under full sunlight and don't let the media to dryout. Energy from photosynthesis may help the plant.

Nope. Only found out about the red VFT after coming back from Sg. Buluh. The traps are quite red though. Maybe try my luck this weekend...
Am currently ensuring it gets lots of sunlight with the pot in a container filled with about 1/2 cm of water.
BTW, should we protect the plant from rain?

Let it be there to take sunlight and rain. It will be fine.
