hello, i'm a newbie, both to the forum as well as to CPs in general. visited david's most awesome place yesterday (with mukaketupat), and got a great dose of CP-ethusiasts generosity with 3 pots of babies -- d. burmanii & spathulata, and a red vft. very happily placed them under florescent light last night and it seemed fine. but when looking at it closely, saw a whole bunch of teeny tiny bugs crawling on the vft and diving into the sphagnum moss. initially, thought it should be fine, since the vft makan insects kan? but then, there seems to be a lot of them (i saw at least 3-4 at each bit of the pot i focussed on) and they don't seem to be eaten. are these bugs and pests of the vft? will it harm it? i tried to do a websearch, but it doesn't really look like spider mites, though it might be aphids. can't be sure. they're very small (like tiny ants), and look like they might have wings. anyone has any experience? it doesn't seem to be on the other 2 pots, and not sure if they came from somewhere in the room, which is a little dusty. should i just spray with ridsect?! will it kill the vft? halp! (and thanks )

Ridsect WILL kill the plant. It's very sensitive to toxic stuff. It's so sensitive it can only have rain, distilled or RO water. The bugs could be alot of things. Keep that pot seperated and isolated. If there is no damage to the leaves the bugs are fine. If you need to get rid of them you need to spray with diluted pesticide. Just a bit. But for now see if the bugs do any harm. You can try squishing them.

Zack, please be careful when giving out advice about the use of insecticides, as what you just said is not correct.
I for one use Provado, a powerful and deadly systemic insecticide regurlarly on my CP's, except for sundews, whose delicate, sticky leaves do not like the stuff at all. There is no need to dilute this pesticide, but I would only reccomend you squirt each plant once and once only, getting as much of the leaves as you can. One squirt works fo rme....after squirting an aphid infested VFT once, they were all dead by the next day!
Provado should be available in Malaysia as it is now famous worldwide as its so effective. If you really do have aphids, you really should seek some-it is the best method.
And there will be no obvious damage tot he leaves if its aphids-they only go for the young growth and then depart just before the leaf matures. If the leaf is crinkly and deformed, then you have aphids. Otherwise, you cant tell until the plant ptus out new growth.

Hi pokokpenyu, So sorry if I gave you a pest infested VFT. I've not noticed these pests on my plants before. So far non of my VFT new leaves are deformed in any way. Therefore I did not suspect a pest infestation. Yaa, I'm so embaress. The room where I place my VFT and Sundews is actually my storeroom. Maybe I should do a spring cleaning on my storeroom... haa, haa... Not a nice thing to start of your CP hobby with a pest infested plant. Maybe you can pass it back to me an I will try to treat it for you. I'll give you another pot. But let me go back today and check the rest of my VFT pots before I do that ok. Sorry again... me bad.... so embarrass

heya david. pokokpenyu and i share an apartment together. Now the vft is in our studio/darkroom. After discovering the bugs, i vacuumed and cleaned the entire room. Its clean now. And this morning, i saw those bugs on the table and i squished some of them (they can fly!). So maybe its the room and dusts. Who knows. But whatever it is, the vft and the sundews are very happy. They don't look sick or gloomy or abnormal. So i think that is what important now. Will look for some sort of insecticide today. Thanks cosmoking for your recommendation. David, theres no need to feel embarass. Its awesome enough that you are providing this space for us to share this obsession and rant about it.

It depends what you used and how much you used. If you spray it more then one squirt then chances are you have sprayed it too much, which will cause it to deteriorate or even die.
